The Only Productivity Hack You Need

Within the human blueprint is our need for sleep. For most of us, sleep takes up at least 7-8 hours a day, about 1/3 of our life.

Many “busy” people try to rewire the blueprint. In a culture that rewards achievement, sleep is the anti-achievement. What a waste of time, right?

Athletes will ask, “what’s the one thing I can do to accelerate my athletic improvement?” Designers will ask, “what’s the one thing I can do to become more creative?”  CEOs will ask, “what’s the one thing I can do to become a better decision-maker?” There’s a fiery center within me that’s always asking, “how can I get more done, faster, better?”

More often than not, the shamefully simple answer is exactly the one I don’t want to hear:  SLEEP.

I don’t want to hear it because sleep forces us to the reality of not being in control.  Sleep resets our souls in 4 important ways.  Sleep keeps us:

  1. Humble. Every day, we’re reminded that we’re limited. Fragile. Our time is limited. We’re not God.
  2. Patient.  I have to be patient with our goals and dreams. Very importantly for  me, I need to be patient with myself. Enough for today, time for bed.
  3. Trusting. Waking up tomorrow is not up to us.
  4. Thankful. Getting to live today was not up to us.

Time for bed.
